		<description>I started using email constantly when I went to college in the US. It was the easisest and most convenient way to communicate with my family and friends back home (besides phone calls and IM). As a person who loves to interact with people, I remember thinking that using a "template" from an e-mail platform to write an "electronic mail" was easy and fast, but in my opinion it lacked that tone and personality of oneself. 

I am not an awesome writer, but when it comes to writing emails/social media/texts I just can't help writing how I talk. When replying to some exciting news, I literally feel like my fingers dance when I type and I sooo wish I could shrink down to a miniature-me and attach myself in the e-mail. Having this feeling made me want to design e-mails as my own, personal "hand-typed letter" where I could capture the excitement, enthusiasm, optimism that I couldn't show there in person. If I was jumping on one foot out of happiness, I wanted to show it! 

These emails have been my outlet when phone calls or face-to-face meetings couldn't happen because of the distance/different time zone or whatever the reason may have been. 

Throughout the past years, I have collected a little over a hundred of these e-mails. They belong to different folders: personal, confidential, emotional, professional, creative, silly, fun, non-sense, philosophic, inspiring, empowering, friendship, love, secret, uber-enthusiastic, etc.

I have chosen a few from these folders to share with you! I will be uploading more soon. Enjoy!

		<description>When Chris and I got engaged I immediately thought to myself "how awesome it is that I get to spend the rest of my life with the most wonderful, awesome and loving best friend ever!!!!," then my second immediate thought was: "…!!!…and how exciting it is that I get to design our wedding!."

We celebrated our big day in Panama City, Panama so I created invitations in both English and Spanish. We wanted something with details that was also simple, colorful and fun.

Hello! Welcome to my website. So happy you are here! 

My name is Marlene and I am a designer, do good enthusiast, mother nature's biggest fan and cotton candy lover. I was born and raised in Panama, where my tropical, colorful, creative energy comes from. I currently live (and love) sunshiny Los Angeles, California, where I freelance full time.

I employ a rigorous design process that starts with buckets full of enthusiasm, dedication and passion, followed by research, inspiration and dialogue. From here, I take care to develop strong concepts that drive content and produce results. In my work, I focus on clarity and simplicity of communication.

My interest is in creating meaningful and awesome design solutions that solve problems and affect change.

		<description>Billabong is a clothing brand that sells surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding apparel. They do not make pogo sticks, but for this project the objective was to choose a brand and create a line for a product that will be untypical for this brand to sell. I chose to do pogo sticks. A poster and a brochure were designed to promote the release of the new Billabong Pogo Stick.

		<description>Alimentando el Futuro (Feeding the Future) is my MFA Graphic Design thesis about malnutrition in the area of Kankintu, located in the Ngäbe Buglé indigenous reservation of Panama. The purpose of this thesis is to stimulate a national and international community to affect change and participate in the fight against malnutrition in Kankintu and ultimately in Panama altogether.

In order to target the national audience (middle- and upper-class Panamanians that have the political, economical, social power to affect change within the country) and international audience (entities fighting global hunger) I have developed projects such as research books, a set of donation cards and an art show in Panama. The latter helped raise funds for Nutre Hogar, a Panamanian NGO that I have been working closely with since the beginning of my thesis.

Even though there is still a lot to be done to erradicate malnutrition in Kankintu and the rest of Panama, I believe that this thesis has helped me “set the wheels of action in motion.” Awareness is nothing without action. This is just the beginning of a wonderful journey in which I have experienced the power of graphic design as a vehicle to enact change.

Alimentando el Futuro was featured as a Case Study in AIGA Design For Good and Living Principles.

		<description>I had the tremendous opportunity to work with Mike Blockstein and Reanne Estrada from Public Matters in the development and design of this social awareness campaign consisting of different bus stop posters with versions in both, English and Spanish. The goal of the campaign is to encourage the East LA community to practice good nutrition habits by including fruits, vegetables in their daily diets and to shop fresh from local markets in the area. 

Featuring this campaign are members of the East LA community itself, including mini-soccer players, cheerleaders, mariachis, metal heads, skaters, elder activists, boxers, scuba divers, zumba ladies, magicians and even vegetarian zombies!

Public Matters LLC is an interdisciplinary California-based social enterprise that works designing and implementing integrated new media, education and civic engagement projects that yield long-term community benefits.
